Reviewer: Beau Tibbs - favorite favorite favorite favorite - February 6, 2021 Subject: El Capitan installer - be patient I used this installer to put back an apple OS on my mid 2009 MacBook Pro. The progress indicator was nicely counting down until it said 'about one second remaining'. Macbook Pro 13' 2015 with OS X Yosemite on board. I've been trying to install OS X El Capitan, but always get the following message: 'This copy of the Install OS X El Capitan application can't be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading.' By the way this is not a date time issue, date is correct on my computer. Compared to versions of Mac OS X released after El Capitan, such as Sierra, El Capitan generally is not faster. Mac computers dating from 2012 and later will generally run more smoothly when upgraded from El Capitan, per Apple's optimizations in Sierra and later. On the other hand, Macs from 2008 to 2010 may run faster with El Capitan.
MacOS High Sierra 10.13 can upgrade Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks or Mountain Lion. These advanced steps are primarily for system administrators and others who are familiar with the command line. You don't need a bootable installer to upgrade macOS or reinstall macOS, but it can be useful when you want to install on multiple computers without downloading the installer each time.
What you need to create a bootable installer
- A USB flash drive or other secondary volume formatted as Mac OS Extended, with at least 14GB of available storage
- A downloaded installer for macOS Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, or El Capitan
Download macOS
- Download: macOS Big Sur, macOS Catalina, macOS Mojave, or macOS High Sierra
These download to your Applications folder as an app named Install macOS [version name]. If the installer opens after downloading, quit it without continuing installation. To get the correct installer, download from a Mac that is using macOS Sierra 10.12.5 or later, or El Capitan 10.11.6. Enterprise administrators, please download from Apple, not a locally hosted software-update server. - Download: OS X El Capitan
This downloads as a disk image named InstallMacOSX.dmg. On a Mac that is compatible with El Capitan, open the disk image and run the installer within, named InstallMacOSX.pkg. It installs an app named Install OS X El Capitan into your Applications folder. You will create the bootable installer from this app, not from the disk image or .pkg installer.

The MacBook 'Core 2 Duo' 2.26 13-Inch (White Polycarbonate 'Unibody' - Late 2009) unveiled a new 'glossy white unibody' case design -- modeled after the previously introduced 'Unibody' MacBook and MacBook Pro models -- but uses polycarbonate rather than aluminum and has a 'non-skid' rubberized bottom surface.
Like the aluminum 'Unibody' models, this system also has a four-finger 'multi-touch' glass trackpad and an integrated battery design that is not intended to be replaced by the end user. Apple reports that this battery design increases runtime, and as a result, this model provides 'up to' 7 hours compared to 5 hours for the model it replaced.
This model is configured with a 45 nm 'Penryn' 2.26 GHz Intel 'Core 2 Duo' processor (P7550) -- with two independent processor 'cores' on a single silicon chip -- a 3 MB shared 'on chip' level 2 cache, a 1066 MHz frontside bus, 2 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-8500) installed in pairs (two 1 GB modules), a 250 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive, and an 8X DL 'SuperDrive'. It also features a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 'graphics processor with 256 MB of SDRAM shared with main memory' and a 13.3' widescreen TFT active-matrix LED-backlit 'glossy' display (1280x800 native resolution).
Connectivity includes AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 2.0 ports, a single audio in/out port, and a Mini DisplayPort that supports an external display at 2560x1600. It does not have a Firewire port or IR to support a remote.
